We tore ourselves away from Green Turtle Bay Resort, and left at 7:30 for the 95 mile run to Clarksville, with sunshine and no locks! Woo hoo!!! We followed the bouyed channel down the length of Lake Barkley, and then entered the much narrower Cumberland River. It was 30-40 feet deep all the way across and such an easy drive. We only passed four barges in the Lake where the channels were wide, and even I could handle the wheel while passing! We stopped at the new Clarksville Marina at mile 127.5, and I finally got a chance to scrub the decks! We were having too much fun at Green Turtle to worry about cleaning! Every day more boats that we had met somewhere along the Loop would arrive, and it was like a big home-coming. I'm sure we'll have the same feeling when we arrive at Joe Wheeler State Park on the Tennessee River for the AGLCA Loopers' Rendezvous, Oct. 21-24.
This is the Yacht Club building. When we went into the dining room Friday night, I noticed lots of small wooden lockers in the foyer of the restaurant and thought it was strange, until I realized the reason. They hold the members' alcoholic beverages...since Grand Rivers is in a DRY county. No alcohol is sold, but you can bring your own bottle to the restaurant, and they will serve it to you.
More lovely condos at Green Turtle
Seagulls followed us for a while....
This is the Kentucky State Penitentiary, built by Italian masons in the 1880's. Locals call it "The Castle on the Cumberland."
Coal going to the power station
Fort Donaldson National Battlefield at Mile 88 was where the Confederates tried to hold off Union Forces. The cannons were fired downriver at Union ships, but the Fort was finally surrounded, and 13,000 Confederate troops were forced to surrender after a bloody battle.
The banks had lovely homes and rocky cliffs.
This pontoon boat asked for help. Their engine quit, and they were drifting broadside in the channel. We towed them to the marina where we were going. Some day it could be us asking for help.....Tomorrow, Sunday, we should arrive in Nashville!
I thoroughly enjoy reading your Blog each day!! And I LOVE LOVE that Butterfly bench at Turtle Cove!! Question.....does the water level get that high that the Yacht Club building needs to be on such tall pilings? Speaking of piles.........I have everything piled on the guest room bed and now have to decide what I REALLY need to take on this trip. Every time I pack I go through this! About the e-mails..it really depends on how strong the signal is. Last year I was unable to get anything out from the Riverboat and the Hotels charge so "FORGET IT"! If I can get an email out you will definitely be on the list!! Stay safe!! Love, Noreen
ReplyDeleteHi Noreen,
ReplyDeleteYes! The water can rise that high!!! In Paducah, the city is on the HIGH banks above the river, and they still have a 14ft. wall around the city!
Have fun....I know you and Joan ALWAYS do!!!! I'll be thinking of you both having Joan's birthday dinner atop the Eiffel Tower!!!
Love, Bernie
