We have had a busy week in Norfolk! We have been attending a rendezvous for AGLCA...America's Great Loop Cruisers Assoc. We have attended 3-4 seminars a day learning about the waters that we will be cruising as we follow the "loop". We also have been meeting many fellow boaters who will also be making this journey. Hopefully, we will meet some of them along the way!
You know you've been somewhere too long when a frog takes up residence under the cover of your electrical cord! This is what Don found as he started to "unplug."
Kate was fascinated by little froggie and loved watching him do the frog kick in the water!
There were dry-docks right across the harbour from our marina. We were entertained one afternoon watching this ship and its dry-dock frame be lowered into the water and maneuvered by numerous tugs.
You can see the ship underneath the bow sprit of the schooner that was berthed on the other side of the wall from us.
We really enjoyed visiting the Douglas MacArthur Memorial, just a few blocks from our Waterside Marina, and right across the street from the MacArthur Mall....a three-storey shopping extravaganza!
General MacArthur and his wife are buried here, under the rotunda of this lovely building that was originally Norfolk's City Hall. The exhibits telling the story of his life and his military campaigns were excellent. As a side note...he advised both Pres. Kennedy and Pres. Johnson NOT to get involved in a war in SE Asia!
MacArthur lived to be 84...and shared my birthday, Jan. 26! His wife lived to be 102!!!
If you double-click on the pictures, they should enlarge.
We saw MANY navy ships as we left this morning, May 11th.
Chesapeake Bay was quite choppy and right on our bow...so we went to Plan B, and stopped at Hampton, VA, across from Norfolk. We were here 3 years ago and really enjoyed the area around the Downtown Hampton Marina.
So glad to hear about your adventures. I was beginning to get worried when I did not see anything on the Blog all week.
ReplyDeleteWent to orthopedic Dr. this to check on my other hip. It's in perfect working condition, Problem, my back. Because of my spinal stanosis, I know I am for back surgery down the road. But right now I will make due with ibuprofen.
Take care, have fun. Again, love the Blog!!!! Joan
