Historic Jekyll Island

It was a short hop from Cumberland Island to Jekyll Island, less than two hours. We took advantage of being at a marina and cleaned the boat and scrubbed the fenders. This morning we went to The Club for breakfast. Around the year 1900, millionaires such as Wm. Rockefeller, Goodyear, Pulitzer, Macy, Crane, etc., built "cottages" on the island where they would spend the winter months. The cottages had no kitchens....each evening they dressed formally and ate at The Club. This beautiful building/hotel has been restored by the Marriott. Many "cottages" have been restored and are open for tours.

The first transcontinental phone call was made from Jekyll Island to San Francisco in 1915.

One November we stayed here for a week and rode bikes all around the island. It is truly one of our favourite places!!!

Tomorrow, Tues., the 17th, we plan on leaving around 7am and going off-shore to the Savannah River, about 70 miles. Then we'll come in the inlet to the Intracoastal Waterway and pass Hilton Head Island and Parris Island on our way north to Beaufort, SC. The weather and wave conditions sound favourable...we shall see!
