Beautiful Beaufort

On Tuesday we left Jekyll Island at 6:50 am and decided to go off-shore since the winds were fairly light and the waves were under 3 feet. The distance saved was about 50 miles, plus we didn't have "no wake zones", and we have traveled the switch-back channels through the marshes of Georgia many times over the past 7 years.
We had planned on coming into the Intracoastal at Savannah, but went farther north to Port Royal Inlet. This leads right into the Beaufort River and passes Parris Island before coming to Beaufort, SC.

St. Helena's Episcopal Church, 1712, celebrating 300 years!

The Historical District here is magnificent....and the rules of restoration are very strict. For example, no screens are allowed on the windows! We took a horse-drawn carriage tour this morning. During the Civil War, Gen. Sherman didn't burn Beaufort since many of the houses were turned into Union hospitals. St. Helena's was a horse stable during the Revolutionary War, and a hospital during the Civil War. Many amputations were done there. Since the saws were defacing the wooden benches, headstones from the cemetery were brought in for the operations!
