Cumberland Island National Seashore

We left Ft. George Island and in a couple hours we were in Georgia at Cumberland Island. There are no bridges to Cumberland....arrival is only by boat. The National Park Service owns 90% of the island. We went on a tour since our last one was 6 years ago! The ruins you see are the remains of the Carnegie family home after it was burned by vandals. Upon her death, Lucy Carnegie had all their horses freed...polo horses, thoroughbreds, appaloosas, arabians....they wander everywhere and even eat sea oats exposed by low tide. It is very easy to tell male from female...the mares are very thin and malnourished looking. Why??? They have foals almost every year and are lacking in the proper nutrition. The Parks do not feed them or interfere in any way. Nature takes its course....

  1. The poor Mares! Wonder how long they last? That must have been a lovely place. Take care.
