After 160 miles and 22 locks on the Erie Canal, we came to Three-River Junction, where the Oneida, Seneca, and Oswego Rivers meet. This is where we "turned right" and followed the Oswego Canal. We passed Pathfinder Island, the setting for James Fenimore Cooper's novel, The Pathfinder, which centers on a trip taken down the Oswego River in 1759...as all you English majors recall!!!
After Oneida Lake we saw many more houses/cottages along the canal. This one was along the Oswego Canal.
We entered this lock when the water was high and there was only 3 feet of clearance beneath the bridge! As the water went down, we could easily go under the bridge! This was the only lock with a bridge across the middle!
Most of the water was leaving the lock to lower us down....but the back gate had a few leaks!
We fed bread to these ducklings...they looked like mallards, but their "mama" was white.
This sailboat is heading to Michigan to take part in a Mackinac race. It has done 42 miles an hour in the ocean with its Kevlar sails, and wants its name on the Mackinac Cup! The boat behind it is the "chase boat" that accompanies it!
When the rain finally stopped, we enjoyed touring Oswego. They have converted former railroad beds into lovely walking trails and even had a tunnel to walk through.
At the opposite end of the tunnel, we faced the Courthouse.
I like this clock...but it was a real treat to see the blue sky!!!
We had to wait a few days for the wind to calm down...and hope to leave tomorrow, 6/6, to cross Lake Ontario to Trenton, Ontario, about an 80 mile trip. Then we will follow the Trent-Severn Waterway to Georgian Bay.
Love seeing the pictures of Oswego. I found a great map so I can really keep track of where you guys are. It's raining AGAIN. Went to the movies to see Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and it was wonderful. Also just finished the third book of the Hunger Games. Loved them. Of course the movie is not playing here anymore. Hope to be able to rent it. Happy sailing. Love, Joan
