We were a bit disappointed with Crystal River. First of all, we didn't see any "crystal" water. It was dark brown! Our dinghy engine isn't working so we couldn't explore the shallow areas and look at the springs. The marina, Pete's Pier, was very reasonable, and we had wonderful dock-mates. They helped us tie up in our slip...we were assigned to a covered slip, but we couldn't be told an exact height or width. Thank goodness it was a very long slip. At high tide, our antennas would have touched the jagged steel roof, so we kept the stern of the boat outside the roof. Plus, the slip that was supposed to be about 20 feet wide, wasn't 17 feet wide. We kept the widest part of our boat behind the middle posts, and we still had only about 4 inches on each side.
One of the boat owners gave us a Looper flag! He had done the Great Loop in 2002, and after you complete it, you fly a gold flag. That was so nice of him!!! The red shows the route we will travel as we do "The Loop."
We left with a falling tide so we would have a bit more speed on our way towards the Gulf. The water in the Gulf was very flat...what a great travel week this has been! We stayed off-shore all the way to Hurricane Pass, and early in the afternoon we arrived at one of our favourite places...Caladesi Island State Park, just north of Clearwater...and the water IS clear!!! A beautiful aquamarine! And our first floating docks in three weeks!!! We walked the trails with our dogs and encountered our first no-see-ums! There is a wonderul book written by one of the early residents of Caladesi Island, Yesteryear I Lived in Paradise.
