Easy Ride to Florence, AL

Our last night at Grand Harbor Marina proved to be extra-special. We heard someone down the dock calling our names...and it turned out to be Hank and Ceci Bassford from Mayalisa II! We first met them in 2006 when we were buddy boats crossing to the Bahamas, and have stayed in touch, off and on, since then. What a great surprise! So we are buddy boats once again, this time going to Florence, AL, just 40 miles farther up the Tennessee River.
Since the courtesy car was already in use, the owner of the Florence Harbor Marina loaned us her car!!! We went to visit a Frank Lloyd Wright house in town, and then went on to the University of Northern Alabama.

The Rosenbaum House was built in 1940 and expanded in 1948. Back in 1940 Wright installed radiant heating in the floors, had recessed and indirect lighting, used open-concept in the floor plan, brought the "outside in"....with no need for drapes on the windows.

All the rooms had wonderful views of the outdoors!

Then we drove to the University of Northern Alabama, after stopping at The Wine Seller...to stock up!

 What a beautiful campus!

Their teams are called The Lions...and they have two "mascots" in the center of the campus!

A male and a female....how nice!

In the evening we had dinner in the Marriott's 360 Grille, a 5-star restaurant, with Hank and Ceci, and Caryl and Larry on Prime Time, who we had first met in Fish Bay, WI, as they were preparing to start the Loop. There was a Thurs. night special...$20 steak dinner, which we enjoyed, and they also sent a shuttle to pick us up at the marina! I took this picture the next day as we traveled up the river....to our next destination...Joe Wheeler State Park!

  1. How special to meet up with those friends of yours from your Bahama trip!! Your weather looks like it has been wonderful....the blue sky makes those autumn trees even prettier! Our weather has cooled down also (maybe not at cool as your weather but WONDERFUL for us). Golfing today with Joan was so pleasant....first time that we never sweat at all!! Safe travels and keep in touch. Love, Noreen

  2. Glad to see that you are meeting up with old friends. Did 18 holes of golf today and feel wonderful. Our weather is finally cooling down and it was beautiful on the course. How much longer until you end up in Sarasota. And then what? Take care and continue the history lesson. By the way, that Frank Lloyd Wright house reminds me of the one that our "doctor" had. The one who took us ice skating!!!!!!
    Happy sailing. Love, Joan

  3. Yes, Joan...the Bird Ave. house! I thought of it when I was in this house!!!
The twins would like us in Sarasota for their birthday party on Nov. 14 and that seems possible. We don't need to sight-see much between here and there because we have already been through it twice already. As long as we don't have to wait long for a calm crossing of the Gulf....time will tell.
You and Noreen have read tomorrow's blog this evening....so you will be sad in the morning when there is nothing new...except this comment!
