We stayed at Hoppies in Kimmswick, MO, the second oldest town in MO today because a cold front was moving through with possible thunderstorms. It was very windy...but no rain or t-storms!!! But we defrosted the fridge and freezer, just like in the old days, and walked to town. There are many gift shops in town, all housed in houses pre-dating 1900. We had lunch at The Blue Owl, a very nice restaurant, and popular with people from St. Louis. It was packed, and the manager said it was really a slow day!
This pecan tree is over 200 years old and was a landmark used by Lewis and Clark on the river!
Don with Fern, and Hoppie is in the background.
Hoppies' diesel pump!
Hoppies Marina has served the people on the Mississippi for 78 years. Recently, the Army Corps of Engineers constructed a rocky wing dam downstream of Hoppies, to divert water to the main channel and make it deeper for shipping. It is causing silting in the entire area of the marina.
Fern's friends flew in for a day!
The current made visible. We will be going downstream until we reach the Ohio River, and then we go against the current, but only for about 80 miles.
