Fun in St. Louis

Guess what???? The lock isn't fixed. Nothing official has been said, but we seem to get the feeling that it could be 4 more days! Time will tell. But today we went to St. Louis with Renald and Lise in their rental car.

First we went to the Gateway Arch which we will pass if and when we get moving down the river again. The Mississippi is quite narrow as it travels by St. Louis which may be the reason there are no marinas downtown. What a shame....compared to how great it was to stay in downtown Chicago. The arch is both a memorial to western expansion and an icon of the city of St. Louis.

We rode to the observation area at the top of the arch is very small "bubbles", at least that is what we called them. We had to duck to get through the small doorway, and there were 5 rather small seats. The tram car stays upright while moving, like seats on a Ferris wheel, but the swinging at times felt very strange.

The view 630 feet above the ground was amazing. On one side was the Mississippi, and on the other Busch Stadium!

From here we drove three miles to the Anhauser-Busch Brewery for a free tour and free samples!

The buildings occupy a huge area.
At the end of Prohibition in 1933 Clydesdales pulled an Anhauser-Busch wagon full of beer to the White House to thank President Roosevelt for his support in repealing Prohibition!!!

Our next stop was the free St. Louis Zoo....the only problem was parking cost $15!!!

For some reason we seemed drawn to the animals in the watery habitats!!!

We returned to Alton around 5 pm, and at 7 pm we took Kate to the fund-raiser here at the marina for an Alton Dog Park. She had fun meeting lots of friendly dogs. We hoped that sort of made up for being left alone for the entire day.

  1. My sister lives in St Louis and I agree, it is a fun and interesting city. Enjoy your "free time" there!! I LOVED your pictures!! But I always described the "vehicle" in the Arch as a "washing machine". To me it looked just like a front loading washing machine!! Keep the blog coming!! Noreen

    1. Yes, it was like a washing machine! We talked about Joan and how she wouldn't like it. It was comforting to look out the tiny windows in the door and see the stairs inside the arch...just in case we had to walk down!!! You have relatives in great places!!!!

  2. I went up in that arch and immediately came back down after getting out of that "washing machine". My claustrophobia set in big time. I was with May Ann and Barb.
Got part of brace off, but have to take the smaller part of the brace and the bone stimulator with me to Europe. Not a happy camper, but then you can probably imagine, being that I am such a patient person.
I need to stop bitching and be grateful that I feel good. I did get permission to ride my bike and chip and putt. Immediately went for a bike ride when I got home. Will chip and putt on Sat. Also, can finally walk Jupie. He's going to miss Noreen, but will have to suck it up!!!!
\Hope you guys are about to get moving soon. Love seein your pictures and reading the daily report. Love, Joan
