From Lake Huron to Lake Michigan

The forecast called for a very calm day on the Lakes....so we left DeTour at 7am and headed out into Lake Huron. After 40 miles of flat seas, with a fog bank thrown in to make things interesting....and to make a lighthouse disappear....we passed by Mackinac Island.

We have visited the island by boat before. It is such a charming place. We enjoyed eating brunch at the Grand Hotel....and we also have visited in the winter. We flew over the Straits of Mackinac with Michigan friends, Jill and Larry, and skied from the airport plateau down to our resort at sea level....but that was many years ago! This time we didn't stop because we have so many new places to visit, but we shared our wonderful memories as we passed by.

Another lighthouse was in the fog "somewhere."
One of MANY tour boats bringing "fudgies" to Mackinac Island.
The Grand Hotel....can't help thinking of Christopher Reeve and the movie "Somewhere in Time."
The "Mighty Mac", the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere and 3rd longest in the world.
Passing under....and entering Lake Michigan.

We averaged 14 knots per hour and arrived in Charlevoix at 1pm. The grounds of the city marina are lovely, and the marina itself is the nicest we have experienced in a very long time!
We took a walking tour of the "mushroom" homes and businesses designed by Earl A. Young, Charlevoix's master builder in stone.

We listened to a concert that was performed in the park adjoining the marina!
The weather forecast indicates winds 15-20 knots tomorrow....it might be a great time to sleep in, enjoy more time in Charlevoix, and keep "relocating" all the Tobermory spiders that are on the outside of our boat!

  1. Hope you have been able to relocate the spiders. The mushroom houses reminded me of some of the Gaudi artwork in Barcelona, Spain.
